Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
comparable to guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
ISO 8692 (Water Quality - Fresh Water Algal Growth Inhibition Test with Scenedesmus subspicatus and Selenastrum capricornutum)
GLP compliance:
not specified
Specific details on test material used for the study:
no data
Analytical monitoring:
not specified
Test organisms (species):
Scenedesmus sp.
Details on test organisms:
The alga S. subspicatus CHODAT was used as a growth inhibition test for fluoranthene and its biodegradation metabolites according to a modified ISO standard (Volenveider, 1974; ISO, 1989). Species of the genus Scenedesmus are common in Slovene waterbeds. For the ISO Standard the chosen species S. subspicatus and S. capricornutum are usually unicellular in culture and the results of tests should be comparable with those
of other authors. Cultures of S. subspicatus were obtained from the National Institute of Biology (NIB, Ljubljana, Slovenia).
Test type:
static
Water media type:
freshwater
Limit test:
no
Total exposure duration:
7 d
pH:
8.3+/- 0.2
Details on test conditions:
Algal growth was determined using the Bürker-Türk counting chamber (Brand, Germany; ISO, 1989) after a 7 days incubation period with a 12 h day/night photoperiod at 100 µE/m2/s, illuminated with Sylvania GROLUX
aquarium lamps, with the PAR in the blue and red wavelengths. Each sample contained approximately 1x10^4 / mL of algal culture that grew in the control samples to 5.2–6.8x10^6 / mL. Concentrations were carefully chosen in such a way that 4–5 samples covered 10–90% inhibition. For each compound at the selected concentration four replicate samples and reagent blank samples were prepared. Algal cells were counted at the
beginning of the experiment (day 0) and after 7 days incubation.
