Additional information

Long-chain fatty acid esters are not expected to have a measurable self-ignition temperature because they decompose before spontaneously igniting. Ricinoleic acid, comprising up to 95% of the fatty acid esters in castor oil, smokes before it boils at atmospheric pressure; this can be equated with decomposition. The measured boiling point of ricinoleic acid is 227 °C at 10 mm Hg, which translates to an estimated boiling point of 587 °C at 1 atm. As a result, the autoignition temperature is expected to be well-above the “smoke point”. The substances responsible for the smoking do not represent the compound, but rather the substance(s) it is “smoking” into. The conclusion is that there is no measurable self-ignition temperature for these fatty acid ester compounds.
