Description of key information

The study on the test substance itself, in addition to three other studies on read across substances, demonstrate the test substance is not readily biodegradable.

Additional information

One reliable study, meeting all the validity criteria (Klimisch 1), assessed the biodegradation of the test substance 9-Octadecenoic acid (Z)-, reaction products with diethylenetriamine, di-Me sulfate-quaternized. The study measured CO2 evolution over the course of the study. After 28 days, 0% biodegradation was determined and therefore, is classified as not readily biodegradable under the conditions of the test. Sufficient biodegradation was demonstrated in the positive control and the test substance was not inhibitory to microbial activity. Four supporting studies are also included, carried out on three different read across substances.

One study was carried out on the read-across substance fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C18 unsatd., reaction products with diethylene triamine, di-... / Fatty acids, C16-18 (even numbered) and C18 unsatd., reaction products with diethylene triamine, di-... / 937-237-2. 0% biodegradation was observed in this study after 28 days, indicating the substance is not readily biodegradable. A further study was run using the same read across substance, but also included the other constituents, partially unsaturated IQAC, DMS quaternised / partially unsaturated IQAC, DMS quaternised, Imidazolium compounds, 2-(C15-17(odd numbered), C17-unsatd. alkyl)-1-[2-(C16-18(even numbered), C18-... / Imidazolium compounds, 2-(C15-17(odd numbered), C17-unsatd. alkyl)-1-[2-(C16-18(even numbered), C18. This study concluded the test item was readily biodegradable and fulfilled the 10 day window criterion (76% degradation after 7 days).

The third supporting study was carried out on the read-across substance, comprising the two constituents: imidazolium compounds, 2-C17-unsatd.-alkyl-1-(2-C18-unsatd. amidoethyl)-4,5-dihydro-N-methyl, Me sul... / Imidazolium compounds, 2-C17-unsatd.-alkyl-1-(2-C18-unsatd. amidoethyl)-4,5-dihydro-N-methyl, Me sul... / 931-745-8 and oleic-acid based IQAC, DMS quaternised / oleic-acid based IQAC, DMS quaternised. In this test 12.7% biodegradation was measured after 28 days and the substance was concluded not to be readily biodegradable.

A fourth study OECD 310 study was carried out on Oleic-acid based IQAC, DMS quaternised_2 . In this test 10% biodegradation was measured after 35 days and 26% after 60 days, which concluded the test item is not readily biodegradable within the 60 day period of the present study.

Overall, the study on the test substance itself, in addition to three other studies on read across substances, demonstrate the test substance is not readily biodegradable.
