Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
24.05.2017 - 27.10.2017
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Specific details on test material used for the study:
SOURCE OF TEST MATERIAL
- Source and lot/batch No.of test material: 608031
- Expiration date of the lot/batch: 25. Oct. 2018
- Purity test date: not stated

STABILITY AND STORAGE CONDITIONS OF TEST MATERIAL
- Storage condition of test material: Room temperature, in a tightyl closed vessel
- Stability under test conditions: assumed stable
- Solubility and stability of the test substance in the solvent/vehicle: not applicable
- Reactivity of the test substance with the solvent/vehicle of the cell culture medium: not applicable

TREATMENT OF TEST MATERIAL PRIOR TO TESTING
none
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Burning time:
ca. 56.09 s
Moisture (wt %):
1.5

First, a safety test was performed. A small amount of th etest item was heated on a magnesia groove with a gas burner in order to derive safety precautions. The test item melted into a clear liquid. Much smoke was observed. The test item burned leaving no residue on the magnesia groove.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The substance Ammonium Benzoate is not highly flammable (for EU regulations) and is a non-flammable solid (for UN regulations).
Executive summary:

When ignited with the flame of a teclu burner, the test item started to burn with orange smoking flame. The test item melted into a brown liquid. When the flame met the start marker the stop watch was started again. After 56.09 sec. (apporx. 1 cm), the flame died. The combustion with flame of the test item did not propagate within the 4 minutes test period.

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on a study performed in accordance with EU Method A.10 and based on experience obtained during the determination of the physical-chemical properties of the substance, the substance does not need to be classified for flammability in accordance with the CLP Regulation.
