No relevant biodegradability studies are available for decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid and trimethylolpropane, however, ready biodegradability studies are available for two closely related structural analogues (CAS 11138-60-6 and CAS 78-16-0). Both studies showed the test substances to be readily biodegradable therefore decanoic acid, mixed esters with heptanoic acid, octanoic acid and trimethylolpropane is considered to be readily biodegradable by read-across therefore further simulation testing on sediment and soil is not required.

Based on the physico-chemical properties of the substance (such as predicted low water solubility) and log Koc value > 5.63, sediment and soil are expected to be the main targets for environmental distribution. However, due to its expected ready biodegradability, the substance will not persist in these compartments. As the substance has a low vapour pressure (7.55 x 10E-6 Pa) and a predicted low water solubility, minimal evaporation into air is expected. .Bioaccumulation is not expected due to the rapid metabolism to fatty acids and alcohols. Also,the test substance has an estimated BCF value of 34.88 L/kg ww (geometric mean). Therefore, in accordance with Annex XIII the substance is not considered to be bioaccumulative.
