Aluminium sulphate
EC Number:
233-135-0
EC Name:
Aluminium sulphate
Cas Number:
10043-01-3
Molecular formula:
Al.3/2H2O4S
IUPAC Name:
aluminium sulphate
Test material form:
solid: particulate/powder
Specific details on test material used for the study:

Sampling and analysis

Analytical monitoring:
yes
Details on sampling:
Water phase samples were taken from the freshly prepared test solutions
One subsample of 20mL acidified with 0.2mL 14M nitric acid (pH<2): unfiltered sample containing total aluminium
A second subsample of 20mL passed through a rinsed 0.45 µm-membrane filter and then acidified: dissolved metal fraction

Test solutions

Vehicle:
yes
Remarks:
reconstituted water according to annex 2 of guideline 203
Details on test solutions:
reconstituted water, no feeding and no aeration during the test,
pH-values (adjusted at 7.5) and oxygen concentrations controlled at test star, after 24h and test end

Test organisms

Test organisms (species):
Daphnia magna
Details on test organisms:
Daphnia magna, clone V, 4-24h old, supplied from Umweltbundesamt and bred in the laboratory
separated by sieving, held in batches of 30 - 50 animals at room temperature in ca. 1800 mL purified drinking water,
daily fed with alga suspension and LiquizellR accroding to EEC-Guideline
water changed once a week

Study design

Test type:
semi-static
Water media type:
freshwater
Limit test:
yes
Total exposure duration:
48 h
Remarks on exposure duration:
semi-static, water chnged after 24h
Post exposure observation period:
no

Test conditions

Hardness:
11.76g CaCl2*2H2O/L
sum of calcium and magnesium ions is 2.5mmol/L, proportion Ca.Mg ions is 4:1
Test temperature:
20.0 - 20.1°C
pH:
adjusted to 7.5, 7.7-8.0 measured
Dissolved oxygen:
93% - 100%
Salinity:
freshwater, 2.59g NaHCO3/L
Conductivity:
not measured
Nominal and measured concentrations:
nominal: 10.0/20.0/40.0/80.0/160.0 mg test substance
nominal: 0.900/1.80/3.60/7.20/14.4 mg Al/L
measured: 0.003/ 0.172/0.176/0.166/0.107/0.115 mg dissolved Al/L (mean)
Details on test conditions:
The range of dissolved Al-concentrations was between 0.08-0.27mg/L, irrespective of the nominal total Al-concentrations.
This seems to correspond to the Al-dissolution capacity of the test medium (buffered to prevent dramatic changes in pH)
Since in the controls a measurable unstructured spectroscopic background was detected by ICP-OES, all data were corrcted
No background was detected by the membrane-filtered samples analysed by ICP-MS
Reference substance (positive control):
yes
Remarks:
sensitivity checks using K2Cr2O7
