- Endpoint:
- relative self-ignition temperature (solids)
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.16 (Relative Self-Ignition Temperature for Solids)
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:

- Key result
- Relative self-ignition temperature:
- > 233 °C
- Remarks on result:
- no self-ignition observed up to the melting point
- Conclusions:
- Under the study conditions, relative self-ignition temperature for the test substance is determined to be >233°C.
- Executive summary:
A study was conducted to determine the relative self-ignition temperature of the substance, Quaternary ammonium compounds, N,N,N'-tris(hydroxyethyl)-N,N'-dimethyl-N'-tallow alkyltrimethylenedi-, bis(Me sulfates) (salts), according to the EU Method A.16. For the test no sample preparation was necessary. The cube was filled with the test substance and was tapped gently, adding more of the test substance until the cube was completely full. The cube was then mounted in the ovenat 20.4 °C a thermo element placed at the centre of the cube. The temperature of the oven was measured every 5 minutes while the temperature of the oven was increased to 240°C with a nominal heating rate of 0.51 K/min. No increase in the temperature of the sample in comparison to that of the oven observed, also no signs of ignition observed. Under the study conditions, relative self-ignition temperature for the test substance is determined to be >233°C (Krebs, 2018).

Determination of heating rate
The heating rate was calculated using the following equation:
Heating rate = (T2 -T1)/(t2 -t1)
T1 = Temperature after 5 minutes in °C
T2 = End temperature in °C
t1 = 5 min
t2 = time at which the end temperature was reached in min.
