Aquatic toxicity data are available for closely related GTL-derived substances in the relevant carbon number range for 'Paraffin waxes (Fischer–Tropsch), full-range, C15–C50 branched and linear':
All GTL-derived substances are poorly soluble in water and made of constituents with various water solubilities. As a consequence, most studies are performed with "Water Accommodated Fractions" (WAFs) and the results must be expressed as "loading rates" instead of "concentrations".
Short-term toxicity to fish
The test results, expressed as the LL50 value, showed that related substances covering the carbon range from C8 to C50 were not acutely toxic to fish at a loading rate of 1000 mg/l.
The acute toxicity of 'Paraffin waxes (Fischer–Tropsch), full-range, C15–C50 branched and linear' to fish is considered to be no effects at the water solubility limit (saturation).
Long-term toxicity to fish
Measured toxicity data are available from the supporting substances GTL Base oil (C18-C50) and GTL Gasoil (C8-C26), which demonstrate lack of chronic effects on fish. The No Observed Effect Loading Rate (33 d NOELR) was 100 mg/L loading rate WAF at these studies.
The chronic toxicity of 'Paraffin waxes (Fischer–Tropsch), full-range, C15–C50 branched and linear' to fish is considered to be no effects at the water solubility limit (saturation).
Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates
Short-term Daphnia toxicity tests are available for three related substances in the relevant carbon number range. In the absence of adverse effects in these studies it can be concluded that the ELR50 (freshwater invertebrates) for 'Paraffin waxes (Fischer-Tropsch), full-range, C15-50 - branched and linear' is >100 mg/l.
It is safe to say that 'Paraffin waxes (Fischer-Tropsch), full-range, C15-50 - branched and linear' will not produce toxicity at the maximum attainable water solubility.
Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates
Long-term invertebrate toxicity tests are available for two GTL-derived substances in the relevant carbon number range for the registration substance. In the test with GTL Base Oil Distillates (C18-C50) there were no adverse effects at the highest loading rate (100 mg/l). In the test with GTL Gasoil (C8-C26) the NOELR was determined to be between 32 and 100 mg/l based on mortality in the parental generation at the highest rate. However, it is considered likely that the effects observed are attributable to the lower carbon number constituents of the GTL Gasoil. This is supported by measured data on constituents reported by CONCAWE in which long-term effects on Daphnia were observed with a C12 constituent, but no effects up to the limit of solubility were observed with constituents ≥C13.
It can therefore be concluded that for 'Paraffin waxes (Fischer-Tropsch), full-range, C15-50 - branched and linear', the long-term NOELR for freshwater invertebrates is ≥100 mg/l. The chronic toxicity to invertebrates is considered to be no effects at the water solubility limit (saturation).
Toxicity to algae and cyanobacteria
Measured toxicity data are available for available for three GTL-derived substances in the relevant carbon number range for the registered substance. In the absence of adverse effects in these studies it can be concluded that the ELR50 (algae) for 'Paraffin waxes (Fischer-Tropsch), full-range, C15-50 - branched and linear' is >100 mg/l and the NOELR is ≥100 mg/l. The acute toxicity to aquatic plants is considered to be no effects at the water solubility limit (saturation).
Toxicity to microorganisms
Measured toxicity data are available from the supporting substances GTL Base oil (C18-C50) and GTL Gasoil (C8-C26). Both substances were found to be not toxic for aquatic microorganisms (3 h-LC50 > 1000 mg/L; 3h-NOEC: ≥1000 mg/l).
The toxicity of 'Paraffin waxes (Fischer–Tropsch), full-range, C15–C50 branched and linear' to microorganisms is considered to be no effects at the water solubility limit (saturation).
