Description of key information

Prednisolone was found to be of very low  toxicity to green algae with a Fresh Water Algal Growth Inhibition Test (ISO 8692) giving a 72h-NOECof 160 mg/L . The QSAR prediction for 16alpha-hydroxyprednisolone was 96h-EC50 of 272.731 mg/L

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
272.731 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
160 mg/L

Additional information

The potential of 16alpha-hydroxyprednisolone to toxic to aquatic algae was assessed in an algal growth inhibition Test performed according to the ISO 8692 guideline (Water Quality - Fresh Water Algal Growth Inhibition Test with Scenedesmus subspicatus and Selenastrum capricornutum) with prednisolone, an analogue of 16alpha-hydroxyprednisolone. This read across approach was supported by QSAR prediction of the toxity of 16alpha-hydroxyprednisolone to green algae using the ECOSAR V1.00 (2 February 2009).

Based on the study and the ECOSAR predictions, 16alpha-hydroxyprednisolone is deemed to be of very low toxicity to green algae.
