Justification:

The PBT Assessment for trisodium hydrogen EDTA (CAS 150-38-9) is based on the criteria set out in the “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.11: PBT Assessment” (ECHA, 2017). 

Persistency

Trisodium hydrogen EDTA is not considered to be readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria based on the available data from several EDTA species. However, a considerable improvement of biodegradability was demonstrated under special conditions like slightly alkaline pH or adaptation of the inoculum. EDTA was biodegradable in an enhanced test using slightly preadapted activated sludge (70-80% after 60 d at pH 8.5; OECD 301A). Therefore, it can be concluded that EDTA is ultimately biodegradable under such conditions and trisodium hydrogen EDTA is not considered to meet the P/vP criteria.

Bioaccumulation

In a test with Lepomis macrochirus, exposed to Na4EDTA for a period of 28 days, the substance was shown to have a BCF value ranging from approximately 1 - 2 (Bishop & Maki, 1980). Thus, trisodium hydrogen EDTA is not considered to meet the bioaccumulation criteria.

Toxicity

Trisodium hydrogen EDTA is classified as H373. Thus, the substance meets the T-criterion.

In conclusion Trisodium hydrogen EDTA is not PBT/vPvB.
