- Executive summary:
The surface tension of an aqueous solution (c = 1 g/L) of the test item was determined as 50.11 ± 0.13 mN/m at 20.0 ± 0.1 °C under GLP and according to OECD guideline 115 and EU method A.5. One additional measurement was performed for verification (after 61 minutes). No significant changes and thus no significant effects on the time in solution was observed.
As these values were all lower than 60 mN/m, the substance is classified as surface active.
The surface tension of the negative control lay within the accepted range.
The surface tension of the negative control (water) revealing a surface tension of 72.21 mN/m at 22.4 °C lay within the accepted range and confirms the validity and reliability of the test.
Reference
The test item solution was held at constant temperature (20.0 ± 0.5 °C). 61 minutes after conclusion of the first measurement series, a second measurement series was performed for verification purposes.
For the first and the second measurement series, the difference between mean values was less than 5% (0.60%). Therefore no additional measurement serie was required.
During the specified period of time, no significant changes in the surface tension were detected. Values ranging from 50.01 mN/m to 50.77 mN/m were recorded showing no significant variations. The values of the single determinations show no significant difference (less than 5 % (0.60%)) between mean values of the two measurement series.
As the determined surface tension of the sample was lower than 60 mN/m, the test item is classified as surface active.
The constants result from the graph of the equation of function in temperature dependence of the surface tension of water.
The calculated value for the surface tension of H2O at 20.0 °C is: 72.74 mN/m
The calculated value for the surface tension of H2O at 22.4 °C is: 72.37 mN/m
The surface tension of the negative control was determined with 72.21 mN/m at 22.4 °C, revealing a small difference of 0.22 % from the calculated value. The difference lies within the accepted range of 1% deviation from the calculated value.
