Description of key information

The chemical structure and insolubility in water and organic solvents of Pitch, coal tar, high-temp., < 1% 4- to 5-membered condensed ring aromatic hydrocarbons [EC no. 701-305-8]] (CTPhtht) prevents to determine a representative Pow. The determination of a Pow value of the target compound is not applicable but to single PAHs.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
6.13
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

More than 99 % of Pitch, coal tar, high-temp., < 1% 4- to 5-membered condensed ring aromatic hydrocarbons [EC no. 701-305-8] is not accessible to chemical analysis due to the absence of identifiable components: Only a residual amount of EPA PAHs of approx. 0.3 - 0.4 % (w/w) can be detected by GC analysis after toluene extraction.

Experimental efforts using the OECD method 117 (HPLC method) failed despite use of the highest methanol/water ratio and tetrahydrofuran as feasible and water-compatible solvent in order to mobilise pitch constituents (see LAUS 2014). The log Pow relates to benzo[a]pyrene.
