Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Studies investigating toxic effects of the target substance Bis(1-methylheptyl) adipate (CAS 108-63-4) on aquatic algae are not available. Thus, in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across to the structurally related source substances Bis(7-methyloctyl) adipate (CAS 33703-08-1), and Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (CAS 103-23-1) was conducted to fulfil the data requirements. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance was used for the assessment. This read-across is justified in detail within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13.

One study in which the toxicity of the source substance Bis(7-methyloctyl) adipate (CAS 33703-08-1) to algae was tested is available. The study was performed according to European standard test guideline, Directive 79/831/EWG, appendix V, part C which is similar to OECD 201. The growth rate of algae (Desmodesmus subspicatus) at nominal test substance concentrations of 0.78, 1.56, 3.13, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 mg/L was followed for 72 h. The determined ErC50 (72 h) was > 100 mg/L. The NOEC (72 h) was 12.5 mg/L based on the algal growth rate.

One study on the toxicity of the source substance Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (CAS 103-23-1) to algae is available. The test was conducted according to OECD 201 as a limit test at a nominal test substance concentration of 50 mg/L. The analytical dose verification determined a test substance concentration of 46 mg/L (meas. arith. mean). An Erc50(72 h) > 46 mg/L (meas. arith. mean) was reported. The determined NOErC (72 h) was 14 mg/L (meas. arith. mean).

Based on the available data for the read across substances no toxic effects on aquatic algae are expected within the limits of water solubility of the target substance Bis(1-methylheptyl) adipate (CAS 108-63-4).
