Description of key information

The toxicity to the aquatic environment Reaction mass of 2-Propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, 2-dodecylhexadecyl ester and 2-Propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, 2-tetradecyloctadecyl ester (EC 946-978-0) was investigated by performing GLP-compliant short-term toxicity studies to freshwater aquatic invertebrates, algae and fish, in accordance with Annex VII and VIII of REACH.

Since the substance was poorly water soluble, Water Accomodated Fractions (WAF) were prepared. Results are expressed based on the initial loading of test substance required to produce the effects.

Daphnia magna was identified as the most sensitive species based on the outcome of the investigation with a 48-hour EC50of 1,120 mg/L and a 48-hour NOEC 320 mg/L. Considering that the lowest L(E)C50for Reaction mass of 2-Propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, 2-dodecylhexadecyl ester and 2-Propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, 2-tetradecyloctadecyl ester (EC 946-978-0) is above 1 mg/L, the substance does not meet the criteria for classification as Aquatic Acute 1; H400 in accordance with Regulation (EC) N° 1272/2008.

There is no available data on the chronic toxicity of Reaction mass of 2-Propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, 2-dodecylhexadecyl ester and 2-Propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, 2-tetradecyloctadecyl ester (EC 946-978-0) to the aquatic environment. As the substance is being registered under REACH in the 10-100 tonnage band there is no requirement for information on long-term studies to aquatic species. Therefore the classification of the registered substance for chronic effects is based on the short-term toxicity of Reaction mass of 2-Propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, 2-dodecylhexadecyl ester and 2-Propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, 2-tetradecyloctadecyl ester (EC 946-978-0) to the aquatic environment and its ready biodegradability. Considering that the lowest L(E)C50for Reaction mass of 2-Propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, 2-dodecylhexadecyl ester and 2-Propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, 2-tetradecyloctadecyl ester (EC 946-978-0) is above 100 mg/L, the substance does not meet the criteria for classification for long lasting effects to the aquatic environment in accordance with Regulation (EC) N° 1272/2008.
