Preliminary Test:

The barium nitrate/cellulose mixture quickly ignited giving a green/yellow flame and grey fumes. As the pile charred, sections glowed orange. After the flame had propagated across the entire pile, it self-extinguished leaving a charred residue. The burning took approx. 28 seconds from ignition to self-extinguishing.

The test item/cellulose mixture quickly ignited giving a orange/yellow flame and dark grey fumes. The flame slowly propagated down the pile, becoming larger and more intense as it did. Once the flame had reached the base it rapidly shrunk in size and intensity releasing a greater amount of light grey flames before self-extinguishing. The burning took 2 min 29 s from ignition to self-extinguishing. The pile was charred, black and crumbly.

Discussion:

Using the criteria given in Method A.17 of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008, the result obtained from the main test determined the test item to have oxidizing properties as it had a burning rate that was greater than the fastest burning rate measured for the reference mixtures.

The test item has been determined to have oxidizing properties.
