Justification:

Persistence (P) Assessment:

A substance is not considered to be persistent if it can be demonstrated that it has potential to degrade (via photolysis, hydrolysis and/or biodegradation). The ready biodegradation potential of Vetimoss was determined in a Manometric Respirometry Test according to OECD Technical Guideline 301F. The degradation rate of Vetimoss never reached 10%. Therefore, Vetimoss: 2-tert-butyl-1,4-dimethoxybenzene is considered to be not readily biodegradable. The potential for Vetimoss to hydrolyse at 3 different pHs was examined in a study undertaken in accordance with OECD 111. Vetimoss is hydrolytically stable at pH 4, 7 and 9 at 50°C. Vetimoss is considered potentially P/vP but there are no data available for the inherent biodegradation potential or potential degradation in different environmental media to confirm this classification. Therefore, Vetimoss is considered potentially Persistent (P) and/or very Persistent (vP) until more data are available.

Bioaccumulation (B) Assessment:

Vetimoss has a log Kow of <4.5 and therefore can be classified as not bioaccumulative (B).

 

Toxicity (T) Assessment:

As Vetimoss is not B/vB, a toxicity assessment is not required.

 

Conclusion of PBT/vPvB assessment

The available data showed that Vetimoss is potentially P/vP but, as it is not B/vB based on the log Kow, therefore Vetimoss is not PBT or vP/vB.
