Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Description of first aid measures: Remove contaminated clothing.

If inhaled: Keep patient calm, remove to fresh air, seek medical attention.

On skin contact: Wash thoroughly with soap and water.

On contact with eyes: Wash affected eyes for at least 15 minutes under running water with eyelids held open, consult an eye specialist.

On ingestion: Immediately rinse mouth and then drink 200-300 ml of water, seek medical attention. Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

Treatment: Treat according to symptoms (decontamination, vital functions), no known specific antidote.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media

Suitable extinguishing media: dry powder, carbon dioxide, foam

Unsuitable extinguishing media for safety reasons: water

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture:

hydrogen chloride, carbon oxides, nitrogen oxides - The substances/groups of substances mentioned can be released in case of fire.

Advice for fire-fighters

Special protective equipment: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical-protective clothing.

Further information: Suppress gases/vapours/mists with water spray jet. Fire debris must be disposed of in accordance with offical regulations.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Avoid inhalation. Avoid contact with the skin, eyes and clothing. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice.

Environmental precautions: Discharge into the environment must be avoided.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up:

For large amounts: Pump off product. Dispose of absorbed material in accordance with regulations.

For residues: Pick up with suitable absorbent material. Dispose of absorbed material in accordance with regulations.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling

Ensure thorough ventilation of stores and work areas. Protect against heat. Protect against moisture. Use only in enclosed systems. Adequate extraction of the vapours is necessary when working with open containers. In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment.

Protection against fire and explosion: Prevent electrostatic charge - sources of ignition should be kept well clear - fire extinguishers should be kept handy.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Segregate from amines. Segregate from alkalies and alkalizing substances.

Further information on storage conditions:  Containers should be stored tightly sealed in a dry place. Keep only in the original container.

Storage stability: Storage duration: 12 Months

Exposure controls / personal protection

Personal protective equipment

Respiratory protection: Wear respiratory protection if ventilation is inadequate. Gas filter for gases/vapours of organic compounds (boiling point >65 °C, e. g. EN 14387 Type A)

Hand protection: Chemical resistant protective gloves (EN 374)

Suitable materials also with prolonged, direct contact (Recommended: Protective index 6, corresponding > 480 minutes of permeation time according to EN 374): nitrile rubber (NBR) - 0.4 mm coating thickness; fluoroelastomer (FKM) - 0.7 mm coating thickness; butyl rubber (butyl) - 0.7 mm coating thickness; chloroprene rubber (CR) - 0.5 mm coating thickness; Suitable materials short-term contact and/or splashes (recommended: At least protective index 2, corresponding > 30 minutes of permeation time according to EN 374); natural rubber/natural latex (NR) - 0.5 mm coating thickness. Supplementary note: The specifications are based on tests, literature data and information of glove manufacturers or are derived from similar substances by analogy. Due to many conditions (e.g. temperature) it must be considered, that the practical usage of a chemical-protective glove in practice may be much shorter than the permeation time determined through testing. Manufacturer's directions for use should be observed because of great diversity of types.

Eye protection: Safety glasses with side-shields (frame goggles) (e.g. EN 166)

Body protection: Body protection must be chosen depending on activity and possible exposure, e.g. apron, protecting boots, chemical-protection suit (according to EN 14605 in case of splashes or EN ISO 13982 in case of dust).

General safety and hygiene measures: Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Avoid inhalation of vapour. Wearing of closed work clothing is required additionally to the stated personal protection equipment. When using, do not eat, drink or smoke. Hands and/or face should be washed before breaks and at the end of the shift. Gloves must be inspected regularly and prior to each use.  Replace if necessary (e.g. pinhole leaks). Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse. Store work clothing separately.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity

Reaction with: water

Flammable gases: no

Toxic gases: yes

Which toxic gases: hydrogen chloride (HCl)

Corrosive gases: yes

Which corrosive gases: hydrogen chloride (HCl)

Smoke or fog: yes

Type of smoke or fog: Hydrochloric acid

Formation of flammable gases: Forms no flammable gases in the presence of water.

Chemical stability: The product is stable if stored and handled as prescribed/indicated.

Possibility of hazardous reactions: Reacts with alkalies. Evolution of corrosive gases/vapours. On contact with water, gaseous decomposition products are formed, which cause build-up of pressure in tightly closed containmical stabilityers. Reacts with alcohols, amines, aqueous acids and alkalies. Reacts with air, water and moisture, under formation of hydrogen chloride. In damp air hydrochloric acid formation is possible.

Conditions to avoid: Avoid humidity. Avoid heat. Avoid prolonged storage. Disregard of the conditions mentioned may result in undesirable decomposition reactions.

Incompatible mationsterials: Substances to avoid: alkaline reactive substances, alcohols, bases, amines, water

Hazardous decomposition products: hydrogen chloride

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment methods

Incinerate in suitable incineration plant, observing local authority regulations. Hydrolysis with alkali / ammonia solution in water. Esterification with methanol and afterwards incineriation in a suitable incineration facility.

Contaminated packaging:  Be careful when handling empty packing which is not decontaminated and rinsed. Decontamination of product residues with sodium hydroxide solution / ammonia solution in water. Thermal recycling of the cleaned drums.
