Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Remarks:
The molten substance does not sustain a flame.

RESULTS

(i) Preliminary test (40 mm pile): Ignition with a hot platinum wire results in melting of the substance. The molten substance does not sustain a flame.

(ii) Main test (250 mm pile) cannot be done.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
(i) The test substance does not sustain a flame.
(ii) The test substance is not classified as highly flammable in terms of its burning characteristics.
Executive summary:

The flammability of the test substance was determined in an EC A.10 test following GLP principles. In the preliminary test (40 mm pile), ignition with a hot platinum wire resulted in melting of the substance. The molten substance does not sustain a flame. The main test (250 mm pile) could not be done. Hence,

i) The test substance does not sustain a flame

(ii) The test substance is not classified as highly flammable in terms of its burning characteristics.

Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
other:
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be soluble in water to form a stable mixture

Description of key information

Flammability: The test substance does not sustain a flame and is not classified as highly flammable in terms of its burning characteristics, EC test A.10, Schürch 1992.

As the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time and is soluble in water to form a stable mixture no studies are needed with respect to “pyrophoric solid features” and “Substance/ mixtures with in contact with water emits flammable gases”, respectively. Also no study is needed to determine self-heating characteristics because the substance is completely molten at 170 °C and there is no evidence of self-heating properties for this substance up to 400 °C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available information, the test substance is not classified as flammable solid, self heating substance, pyrophoric solid or substance which in contact with water emits flammable gases in accordance with EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation No. (EC) 1272/2008.
