Description of key information

Toxicity to soil macroorganisms: A chronic earthworm study was conducted to determine the effect of Pencycuron on reproduction of the earthworm Eisenia fetida in a laboratory test. Reproduction was determined after 56 day, resulting in the NOEC of ≥3.3 mg a.s./kg soil dw.

Toxicity to terrestrial plants:

Seedling emergence study: Following a soil surface (pre-emergence) and foliage (post-emergence) application of Pencycuron at 250 to 7500 g a.s./ha to 11 terrestrial plant species. None of the 11 plant species showed phytotoxic effects up to the proposed maximum seasonal spray application rate of 7500 g a.s./ha. The NOER was determined to be 7500 g/ ha (corresponding to 2.5 mg/kg soil dw).

Toxicity to soil microorganisms: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Pencycuron on the activity of soil microflora with regard to nitrogen transformation in a laboratory test. A loamy sand soil was exposed for 42 days to 2.0 and 10.0 mg/kg soil dw. Pencycuron caused no adverse effects (difference to control <25%) on the soil nitrogen transformation (measured as NO3-N production) at the end of the 42-day incubation period. The NOEC was determined to be ≥10.0 mg/kg soil dw.

Toxicity to birds: The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of dietary exposure of Pencycuron on Japanese quail's reproduction. The NOEC was determined to be 122.1 mg/kg bw/d.
