First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Remove patient to fresh air. Symptomatic treatment.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Immediately irrigate with plenty of water for 15 minutes.
Obtain immediate medical attention.
Emergency measure - Skin: Remove contaminated clothing without delay and lanuder
before re-use. Rinse thoroughly with soap and water. Do not
omit cleaning hair or under fingernails if contaminated.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Seek medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Dry chemical powder pressurised with nitrogen, or absorbent
clay may be used. Reignition may occur. If fire cannot be
controlled with extinguishing agent, keep a safe distance,
and allow the product to burn until consumed.

Product arising from burning: Products of combustion may contain oxides of phosphorus and

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: NIOSH approved positive pressure, self-contained breathing
apparatus or air-line respirator with full face respirator
should be worn.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Wear suitable protective clothing, see 2.3.1.

Block off source of spill, extinguish fire with appropriate
extinguishing agent. Remove sources of ignition. Do not
contact spill with paper cloth or vermiculite as spontaneous
ignition will occur. Cover spill with an inert absorbent
clay and place in a sealable container such that free air
volume is minimised. Seal under inert gas.

Handling and storage

Handling: 1 The results of tests on 3 materials are reported in this

a) Dowicil 200; The notified substance

b) Dowicil 75 containing 25% sodium bicarbonate

c) Dowicil 100 the Cis/Trans mixture

The majority of short term toxicity tests which are reported
in detail were conducted on Dowicil 75. Reference is made to
the results of suudies on Dowicil 200 some of which are of
poor quality. However, the results are considered acceptable
when they are supported by the results for Dowicil 75.

2 The following mutagenicity sudies were assessed for
notification purposes:-

For notification purposes a positive Ames and in vitro
cytogenetics test, in CHL cells, using Dowicil 200 were
assessed. Additional negative in vitro studies (cytogenetics
test in rat lymphocytes and UDS study in rat hepatocytes)
with Dowicil 200 are available but have not been assessed.
In addition studies using Dowicil 100, a positive in vitro
cell gene mutation test, without metabolic activation only,
in CHO cells and a negative in vivo mouse nicronucleus test,
are available but have not been assessed. Although a
negative in vivo study on the cis/trans isomer is available
the UK c.a. on the basis of the positive in vitro studies
with Dowicil 200, has requested a mouse micronucleus test
immediately post base-set. Therefore, the UK c.a. seeks the
opinion of other c.a.on the proposed mutagenicity testing

In addition, three reproductive developmental studies are
available on Dowicil 200. A decision on whether these
studies will be assessed for base-set will be made at the
risk assessment stage.

Storage: Store in sealed cylinders out of sun and away from heat, at
temperatures less than 50 deg C. Areas containing this
material should have fire-safe practices and electrical
equipment in accordance with codes governing Class I
Flammable liquids. Exposure to air and other oxidising
material must be avoided. Store under an inert atmosphere
such as nitrogen.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: Substance:

In steel or stainless steel cylinders. Volume will vary
between 5 and 450 litres.

100 Imperial gallon steel cylinders built to DOT/TC 4BW-240

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: In normal use, the substance is a catalyst and is recycled
in a continuous process.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: Oxidisation with dilute peroxide or hypochlorite will render
the substance harmless (A634).

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not recommended.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Recommended method. Incineration in a facility equipped to
convert the substance to phosphoric acid is recommended

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Not recommended.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Not applicable as the substance will not enter the public
