Additional information
Clinical signs of respiratory distress were observed during short term and long term toxicity studies with BF3 or BF3 dihydrate, even at low concentrations. Eye irritation was observed (lacrimation), and no sign of skin irritation was observed during those studies. Considering that BF3 is hydrolyzed when in contact with water, it was expected that no or few skin irritation was present, and that a slight eye irritation could be observed.

Justification for classification or non-classification
According to EU Regulation (EC) N0. 1272/2008 (CLP), the substance is classified as corrosive to skin, category 1 A, and eye damage category 1 (H314 And H318). A STOT Single Exp. 3 (H335) is proposed for respiratory tract irritation.
According to EU directive 67/548/EEC, the substance is corrosive C, R35) . In addition, it is proposed to classify BF3 as irritating for respiratory tract (R37).
