Description of key information

The acute toxicity of 2,4 -dichloro aniline, being the hydrolysis product of 2,4 -dichlorophenyl isocyanate, towards invertebrates is characterized by a LC50 (48 h) of 0.50 mg/L (Maas-Diepeveen, 1986).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Isocyanates are known to rapidly hydrolyse under the formation of the corresponding amine. Thus, it is not possible to obtain a stable concentration of 2,4-dichlorophenyl isocyanate over the whole test duration due to its rapid hydrolysis and observed effects would be rather caused by the transformation product (2,4-dichloro aniline) than by the original substance itself. Concluding, results obtained through the testing of 2,4-dichloro aniline can be used to assess the risk of 2,4-dichlorophenyl isocyanate towards aquatic organisms as well.
