An experimental GLP study was conducted, that cannot be related to the EC/OECD guidelines, but is nevertheless acceptable. Visual estimation indicates high solubility (> 10 g/mL) of TFA in ISO water (250 mg CaCO3/L), artificial sea water and buffer solutions at pH 5.0, 7.0 and 9.0, at room temperature.
Supporting litterature data from one database and one handbook indicate that TFA is miscible in water, which is consistent with the above results.
In order to fill the key value field required for CSA, the maximum significant solubility value was considered to be equal to the mean density of the substance. Indeed, the solubility of above 10 kg/L obtained experimentaly demonstrates that the substance is totally miscible in water. But the concentration of 10 kg/L is not a value of water solubility because the 10kg of substance triggers a final volume higher than 1L of water. TFA is so soluble in water that when it is added in water with increasing amount, eventually we will reach a solution of pur TFA, which correspond to the density value.
