Three studies (Ames tests) were available on the mutagenic properties of different hydrocarbon substances. None of these studies showed any mutagenic effect of the different test materials without and with metabolic activation.

One chromosome aberration in vivo study on "Hydrocarbons, C10 -C13, n-alkanes,<2% aromatics" also showed no signs of mutagenicity.  

Based on a read across from these substances, the substance Paraffins (petroleum), normal C>10 is expected to show no signs of mutagenecity.


Short description of key information:
All Ames tests on "hydrocarbons, C10-C13, n-alkanes, C11-C14, n-alkanes and C14-C17, n-alkanes, <2% aromatics" showed no mutagenic effect with and without metabolic activation. The chromosome aberration in vivo study on "hydrocarbons, C10-C13, n-alkanes, <2% aromatics" also showed no signs of mutagenicity.

Endpoint Conclusion: No adverse effect observed (negative)

Justification for classification or non-classification

The negative results using in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity assays do not warrant the classification of C10 -C17, n-alkanes, < 2% aromatic hydrocarbons as genotoxic under the new Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 on classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP) or under the Directive 67/548/EEC for dangerous substances and Directive 1999/45/EC for preparations.
