2-chloropropionic acid is not explosive in air.

An assessment of the molecular structure of 2-Chloropropionic acid was made to determine whether it contained any plosophores or auxoploses, i.e. functional groups that confer or enhance explosivity. The oxygen balance was calculated and the theoretical heat of formation was estimated.

2-chloropropionic acid was found not to contain any functional groups that confer or enhance explosivity.

The calculated oxygen balance for 2-chloropropionic acid is -88.47%, indicating it is unlikely to self-detonate.

The theoretical heat of formation of 2-chloropropionic acid was calculated to be -269.9 KJ/mol. This indicates 2-chloropropionic acid is not an endothermic substance and therefore will not release heat energy upon decomposition to its elements.

It can be concluded the 2-chloropropionic acid is incapable of exothermic reaction and therefore does not present a risk of explosion.
