C4 sulfonamido alcohol underwent primary biodegradation in an inherent biodegradability test, forming C4 glycine acid as a stable product, with ca. 97% conversion to the glycine acid within 28 days. Accordingly, toxicity of both C4 sulfonamido alcohol and C4 glycine acid was examined. C4 sulfonamido alcohol showed considerably more aquatic toxicity than C4 glycine acid, with the marine invertebrate Mysidopsis bahia being the most sensitive species tested. While a water solubility limit of the glycine acid is not available, test solutions were, in most cases, clear and colorless throughout the test at a nominal concentration of 100 mg/L.
