Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Biodegradation in water: screening tests: No significant biodegradation is expected for the silanol hydrolysis product, based on read-across from a structurally-related substance.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

There are no reliable ready biodegradation data available for 3-(diethoxymethylsilyl)propylamine, therefore good quality data for the structurally-related substance, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (CAS 919-30-2), have been read across. Both substances hydrolyse to structurally-related hydrolysis products,

3-(dihydroxymethylsilyl)propylamine

and

3-aminopropylsilanetriol

, respectively. The other hydrolysis product in both cases is ethanol, which is readily biodegradable.

Both

3-(diethoxymethylsilyl)propylamine

and

3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane

are within an analogue group of substances within which, in general, there is no evidence of any significant biodegradation once biodegradation of alkoxy/acetoxy groups has been taken into account.

It is therefore considered valid to read-across the results for

3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane

to fill the data gap for the registered substance. Additional information is given in a supporting report ( PFA, 2013f) attached in Section 13 of the IUCLID 5 dossier.

3 -Aminopropyltriethoxysilane attained

67% biodegradation in 28d. This biodegradation is attributable to the biodegradation of the ethanol hydrolysis product, which is readily biodegradable. No significant biodegradation is expected for the silanol hydrolysis product. A slightly lower degradation % would be expected for3-(diethoxymethylsilyl)propylamine, as a lower proportion of carbons in the structure are associated with alkoxy groups. However, the conclusion of nosignificant biodegradation expected for the silanol hydrolysis product is read-across.

The study is considered to be reliability 1 (reliable without restrictions); the read across of the result is considered to be reliability 2 (reliable with restrictions).
