There are reliable, high quality data available for each of the appropriate short term ecotoxicity endpoints and in many cases additional supporting studies are also available. In each case the key study was selected on grounds of its scientific reliability and level of compliance with both the appropriate testing guideline and GLP criteria.
The key values for assessing the acute aquatic toxicity of dimethyltin dichloride were as follows:
Short-term toxicity to fish: 96 hour LC50 > 100 mg/L (Brachydanio rerio)
Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates: 48 h EC50 = 17 mg/L (Daphnia magna)
Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria: 72 h ErC50 = 37 mg/L (Scenedesmus subspicatus)
Aquatic invertebrates were therefore considered to be the most sensitive trophic group to dimethyltin dichloride.
The effect of the test item on the respiration of activated sewage sludge gave a 3-Hour EC50 value of 79 mg/L.
No long-term aquatic toxicity studies were performed as the chemical safety assessment concluded that the substance was of no immediate concern to the environment. The available data are adequate for classification and labelling purposes and PBT assessment and as such no further testing is considered to be necessary at this stage.
