Description of key information

Key study: Roulstone (2013): The effect of the test item on the respiration of activated sewage sludge gave a 3-Hour EC50 value of 79 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
79 mg/L

Additional information

A study was performed to assess the effect of the test item on the respiration of activated sewage sludge. The method followed was designed to be compatible with the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals (2010) No. 209 "Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test (Carbon and Ammonium Oxidation) ". The study was conducted in accordance with GLP and was assigned a Klimisch reliability score of 1.

The effect of the test item on the respiration of activated sewage sludge gave a 3-Hour EC50 value of 79 mg/L. Using the methods available, it was not possible to calculate 95% confidence limits from the data generated.

It was not possible to determine a No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC). The Lowest Observed Effect Concentration (LOEC) after 3 hours exposure was 3.2 mg/L.

The Kungolos et. al (2004) study is brief and not conducted in a method resembling a recognised guideline.
