Several biodegradation screening tests are available, which have investigated the ready- and inherent biodegradability of the tetraethylene glycol and category members. In one study, rapid biodegradation of tetraethylene glycol was observed which was sufficient to indicate ready biodegradability according to OECD guidelines. In the OECD 301A study of BASF AG, 90 - 100 % removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as the test substance was observed within 20 days. Other supporting studies show potential for extensive degradation of the substance by various wastewater-derived microbial inocula. The rates and extents of degradation have been shown to increase with acclimation (prior exposure) of microorganisms to the substance.
