Description of key information

Octanol-water partition coefficient [Fatty alcohols C16 – C18 (even numbered), branched and linear]: 6.1 - 7.6 at 20°C (QSAR)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Fatty alcohols C16 – C18 (even numbered), branched and linear is a substance of unknown or variable composition (UVCB) containing linear and branched alcohols with carbon number in the range C14-C20. Partition coefficient is only meaningful in respect of the individual constituents such a substance. A result for the whole substance is not scientifically meaningful for the purpose of assessment of exposure or risk. The need for a sound understanding of partition coefficient is acceptably met by estimation of the individual constituents present in the substance. A predicted log Kow of 6.1 - 7.6 at 20°C was determined for the constituents of the substance using a validated QSAR estimation method. The result is considered reliable and selected as key study. This value is supported by a log Kow of >3 reported for the substance in a secondary source to which no reliability could be assigned.
