Additional information

Short-term toxicity of ethyl methyl carbonate to freshwater fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae has been determined experimentally. Algae gave the lowest EC50 (based on measured exposure concentrations) and this was used as the critical value for calculation of PNEC values for freshwater and marine organisms. The sediment and soil PNECs were derived using the equilibrium partitioning method. The PNEC for STP microbes was calculated from a study assessing toxicity to Pseudomonas putida which determined an EC50 of 760 mg/l, a EC10 of 156 mg/l and a NOEC of 100 mg/l. The EC50 was selected as the critical value for calculation of the STP PNEC as it produced the most conservative value. 

Conclusion on classification

Based on the available ecotoxicity data and confirmed ready biodegradability, the classification of ethyl methyl carbonate is concluded to be:

- Not classified for the environment in accordance with Directive 67/548/EEC criteria.

- Not classified for the environment in accordance with Regulation 1272/2008 (EU CLP GHS) criteria.

No classification for hazards to the environment is applied to ethyl methyl carbonate in Annex VI of the CLP Regulation No. 1272/2008.
