Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

One key study has been identified as having assessed the short-term toxicity of ethyl methyl carbonate to freshwater green algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus)) – an OECD 201, GLP-compliant test using and analytically verified test concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
62 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
62 mg/L

Additional information

In the acute toxicity to aquatic algae test, results of the range-finding study suggested that it was appropriate to only conduct a limit test for the main study. In the main study, no significant algal growth inhibition occurred. Analysis of the test concentrations revealed a significant decline in test concentration and so results were based on time-weighted measured mean concentrations. A 72-h EC50 of >62 mg/l (for both growth rate and biomass) and NOEC of 62 mg/l were determined and these suggest that ethyl methyl carbonate is of low toxicity to freshwater algae.
