Description of key information
This endpoint has been waived as it was not scientifically feasible to conduct the ASRIT test, as preliminary tests indicate the test substance is very volatile. However for the purposes of the chemical safety assessment, a study has been identified as having assessed the short-term toxicity of ethyl methyl carbonate to micro-organisms (Pseudomonas putida) - an ISO 10712, GLP-compliant test using analytically verified test concentrations.

Under the conditions of the acute toxicity to micro-organisms test (following guideline ISO 10712), the acute toxicity of ethyl methyl carbonate to Pseudomonas putida has been assessed and gave an EC10 of 100 mg/l, EC50 of 760 mg/l and a NOEC of 156 mg/l. The NOEC is higher than the EC10 value (determined by graphical representation of the data) and this is considered to be due to the NOEC being dependant on the test concentrations used and the normal biological variations observed between replicate control and test cultures rather than being a point based estimate derived from the experimental inhibition values. However current literature suggests that EC10 values should be used in favour of NOEC values as they represent a better estimate of the concentration at which the test material has negligible effects on the test organisms.
