Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

Key information is contributed by a study of Cognis, Borowivcz 1998 (GLP), which was conducted with the read-across substance 577-11-7 (Docusate Sodium). Justification for read-across: CAS 922 -80 -5 belongs to the same category as CAS 577 -11 -7. Hence biodegradation results of CAS 577 -11 -7 are appropriate to characterize the biodegradation of CAS 922 -80 -5. The justification for read-across and the category definition is provided in Chapter 13. The read-across study was conducted using analytical grade Docusate Sodium (98% pure). Furthermore, it applied test guideline ISO 14593, i.e., the reference method of 648/2004/EEC. ISO 14593 which is equivalent to OECD 310. The results of the study indicate that more than 90% of the test substance was degraded within 28 days, respectively. The results of the study indicate that Docusate Sodium is readily biodegradable. Based on the read-across justification in Chapter 13, it is concluded that CAS 922-80-5 is readily biodegradable.

Additional information

Further evidence that CAS 922 -80 -5 is readily biodegradable is provided by supportive QSAR modelling. Biodegradability was estimated using the BIOWIN™ v4.10 module of EPI Suite™ v.4.11. KOCWIN™. The conclusion of the BIOWIN™ v4.10 assessment is that the substance is readily biodegradable.
