Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Description of key information

1,6-Dichlorohexane was tested in two aquatic tests with algae. The first test was a standard test according to OECD 201. The NOEC-values for both inhibition of growth rate and yield after 72 hours 72 hours were 3.24 mg/L. The LOEC-values for both inhibition of growth rate and yield after 72 hours were 9.80 mg/L. The EC50-values for inhibition of specific growth rate (ErC50) and yield (EyC50) with 95 % confidence intervals after 72 hours were 7.74 (7.20 - 8.14) and 4.84 (3.90 - 7.24) mg/L, respectively.

Additional information

In the key study, the toxicity of 1,6 -dichlorohexane to the unicellular freshwater green algae Desmodesmus subspicatus was determined according to OECD guideline no. 201. The aim of the study was to assess the effects on growth rate and yield over a period of 72 hours.

The study was conducted under static conditions with an initial cell density of 4332 cells/mL. With regard to the volatility of the test item glass flasks without headspace were used to reduce losses of test item. Based on a preliminary test 7 concentration levels were tested in a geometrical series with a dilution factor of 3.16 (nomimal): 0.10, 0.316, 1.00, 3.16, 10.0, 31.6, 100 mg/L corresponding to initial measured test item concentrations of 0.0282, 0.0991, 0.319, 0.955, 3.24, 9.80, 27.5 mg/L. Three replicates were tested for each test item concentration and six replicates for the control.

The NOEC-values for both inhibition of growth rate and yield after 72 hours 72 hours were 3.24 mg/L. The LOEC-values for both inhibition of growth rate and yield after 72 hours were 9.80 mg/L. The EC50-values for inhibition of specific growth rate (ErC50) and yield (EyC50) with 95 % confidence intervals after 72 hours were 7.74 (7.20 - 8.14) and 4.84 (3.90 - 7.24) mg/L, respectively.

In a further no standard test (supporting study), 1,6 -dichlorohexane was tested to inhibition of assimilation to Scenedesmus Subspicatus for 24 h. The EC 50 (24 h) was 12.9 mg/L. Furthermore the EC 10 and the EC 90 were 4.7 mg/L and 35.3 mg/L.
