Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Highly flammable

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
highly flammable

Additional information

The test substance was tested with EU Method A.10 (Flammability Solids). The test substance was determined to be highly flammable as it propagated combustion over 100 mm < 45 seconds.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to CLP Regulation n. 1272/2008, and Table 2.7.1, Criteria for flammable solids are:

CATEGORY 1:

Substances and mixtures other than metal powders:

(a) wetted zone does not stop fire and

(b) burning time < 45 seconds or burning rate > 2,2 mm/s

CATEGORY 2:

Substances and mixtures other than metal powders:

(a) wetted zone stops the fire for at least 4 minutes and

(b) burning time < 45 seconds or burning rate > 2,2 mm/s

Sodium hydride propagated combustion over 100 mm in < 45 seconds, the pure substance should be classified highly flammabl, H228, category 1.

However the test item is usually marketed in mineral oil, that as a stabilizer prevents flammability. For this reason this substance (sodium hydride in mineral oil) is not classified as highly flammable.
