In a preliminary test it was found that the flask method (OECD Guideline 105:Water Solubility; 1995/EU Method A.6: Water Solubility; 2008) could not be applied for the determination of the water solubility of MDEA-Esterquat (Rewoquat V 10057) due to the formation of in-separable emulsions at concentrations above 10 mg/L at 19.7°C. Therefore, the main test was conducted using Method 2 of ASTM International E 1148 - 02. Eight suspensions of the test substance in double distilled water at target concentrations of 2.08, 5.20, 10.0, 24.7, 49.0, 100, 252, and 502 mg/L were prepared in Erlenmeyer flasks. The flasks were placed on a magnetic stirring device in a climate room at 19.7 +/- 0.5°C where the content of each solution was stirred for 72 h. After the stirring period, duplicate sub-samples were taken from the test solutions and the degree of turbidity was measured for each sample using a spectrophotometer at 700 nm. A linear relationship between response and test substance concentration was observed in the concentration range 2.08 - 502 mg/L. Since zero turbidity was not observed in any of the test solutions containing the test substance, the solubility of the test substance in water is considered equal to the intercept at the x-axis. The water solubility was estimated as 17.6 mg/L at 19.7°C.

Conclusions:
Interpretation of results: slightly soluble (0.1-100 mg/L)
In a study conducted according to Method 2 of ASTM International E 1148 - 02, the water solubility of MDEA-Esterquat C16-18 and C18 unsatd. was estimated to be 17.6 mg/L at 19.7°C based on the results of turbidity measurements. According to the classification scheme, the test substance can be regarded as slightly soluble in water.
