Justification for classification or non-classification

According to Annex VIII of Regulation 1907/2006, the studies on acute toxicity do not generally need to be conducted if the substance is classified as corrosive to the skin. Vanadium oxide sulphate pentahydrate is a strong acid (pH< 2) and meets the classification criteria of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 for Skin Corr. 1 and Serious eye damage (H314: Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.) Hence, any effects observed in an acute toxicity study does represent the corrosivity of the substance and not its intrinsic toxicity.

Specific target organ toxicant (STOT) – single exposure

The classification criteria according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 as specific target organ toxicant (STOT) – single exposure, oral, inhalation, or dermal are not met since adverse health effects, including reversible and irreversible, were not observed immediately or delayed after exposure. The corrosive properties of vanadium oxide sulfate lead to irritation after inhalation exposure - this was addressed with the self-classification as STOT-RE 1. No further classification is required.
