First-aid measures

Signs and symptoms of exposure : Irritation of eyes, nose and throat
General : Remove from exposure. Remove contaminated clothing
Ingestion : Flush out mouth with plenty of water.
Eye contact : Wash with plenty of water.
Skin contact : Flush with water.
Medical care : In case of substantial ingestion it is desirable to consult a physician.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing Media : Use standard firefighting techniques.
Use dry chemical, carbon dioxide or foam.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures : As with all fires, evacuate personnel to safe area.
Firefighters should use self-contained breathing equipment and protective clothing.
Risk of combustion : When heated to decomposition material emits toxic fumes of Br-.
Protection : Standard firefighting equipment.

Accidental release measures

Personnel protection : Make sure all personnel involved in the spill area follow good industrial hygiene practices.
Any person entering a spill area or an unknown concentration of vapor or dust, should use a respirator.
Environmental control : The product is soluble in water.
Isolate the pollute area and the contaminated water.
Cleanup method : Carefully sweep spilled product into containers. Flush spillage area with plenty of water.

Handling and storage

Handling : For the methanol keep away from open fire and sparks.
Ground mechanical equipment in contact with the material to dissipate the potential building up of static electricity.
Avoid smoking.
Storage : Stow away from boiler, engine, open fire and sparks.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Precautions : Containers should be stored away from flammable materials and sources of heat and flame.
Store away from foodstuffs or animal food.
Limit value : methanol : LD50/oral/rat : 5628 mg/kg
: sodium bromide : LD50/oral/rat : 3500 mg/kg
Personnel protection:
Respiratory : Use a suitable respirator (active carbon type A)
Ventilation : Local exhaust recommended.
Skin protection : Use disposable gloves of nitrile rubber: Thickness : 0.2mm
Breakthrough time (EN 374) : - Heptane : > 30 minutes
- Sodium hydroxide 50% : > 480 minutes
- Sulphuric acid 96% : > 30 minutes
Eye protection : Use safety goggles.
Other protection : Use suitable protective clothing
Avoid contamination of working area. No eating,
smoking or drinking in area of the product.

Stability and reactivity

The methanol is explosive with air.
Incompatible with acids, alkaloidal and heavy salts.

Disposal considerations

Spilled materials : Sweep up spilled material being careful not to create dust. Place sweepings in a chemical waste container.
Flush contaminated area with water.
Dispose of waste in accordance with federal, state and local laws.
Packing materials : Dispose contaminated packing materials in accordance with federal, state and local laws.
