Description of key information

skin irritation: Eastman Kodak Company, 1977, guinea pig: corrosive to skin
eye irritation: classified according to Annex 1 to Directive 67/548/EEC as "corrosive" (R 34); GHS classification with H314 (Skin Corr.1B): testing the
possible irritation to the eye not neccessary.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (corrosive)

Additional information

Skin irritation/corrosion was tested in a study, where 3 guinea pigs per dose were dermaly exposed to 2-chlorobenzaldehyde using a impervious cuff as coverage. After dosing, observations were recorded for 14 days. Because scattered necrosis and gross oedema already occured after 24 hours, as well as complete alopecia after 14 days of observation, the test substance has to be regarded as a skin corrosive.

2-chlorobenzaldehyde is classified according to Annex 1 to Directive 67/548/EEC as "corrosive" (R 34); GHS classification with H314 (Skin Corr. 1B). The toxicity of the product is based on its corrosivity. The toxicity results from the caustic properties. Therefore, testing the possible irritation to the eye is not neccessary.

Justification for selection of skin irritation / corrosion endpoint:
Comparable to current guideline requirements and scientifically valid with acceptable restrictions.

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: corrosive

Effect level: empty Endpoint conclusion: Adverse effect observed

Justification for classification or non-classification

Regarding the results of the study, the classification of 2-chlorobenzaldehyde into Cat. 1B (corrosive) according to GHS and GHS UN

is justified.
