The reaction product of 2 -[bis(cyanomethyl)amino]-propanenitrile and sodium hydroxide saponifies during storage and ends up as Trilon M. Therefore, a read-across to the biodegradation studies for Trilon M were established.

In a respirometric test according to OECD 301F the biodegradation of MGDA was investigated [BASF AG, 1995]. After 28 days 80 -90 % degradation of MGDA was determined. Furthermore, the two enantiomers of MGDA (L-MGDA and D-MGDA-Na3) were tested separatly in biodegradability tests according to OECD 301B. After 28 days 90-100 % degradation were measured for both enantiomers. Hence, it was shown that optical rotation has no impact on the biodegradability of the racemat MGDA.
