Description of key information

GLS-Silane is considered to be corrosive based on read across to the primary constituents in GLS-Silane.  Dichloro(methyl)silane is accepted as being corrosive to skin (key study: BRRC, 1981) and, implicity, damaging to eyes. Acute inhalation toxicity studies have shown that this substance is corrosive to the respiratory tract.

Additional information

Two studies were available for skin irritation/corrosion, therefore the most reliable of these was selected as the key study. Both studies showed dichloro(methyl)silane to be corrosive to the skin. A further study showed this substance to be corrosive to eyes. Dichloro(methyl)silane makes up 20 -40% of GLS-Silane and thus was used for read across. In addition, two other substances contained in GLS-Silane [chloro(dimethyl)silane - CAS 1066 -35 -9 - in GLS-Silane at 10 - 20% and trichlorosilane - CAS 10025 -78 -2 - in GLS-Silane at 5 -15%] waived in vivo skin testing on the basis of known corrosivity. Thus, based on the weight of evidence, GLS-Silane is considered to be corrosive to the skin and eyes.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Dichloro(methyl)silane is labelled 'R35 Causes severe burns' and 'R37 Irritating to respiratory system' under Directive 67/548/EEC. Based on a weight-of evidence the proposed labelling according to Regulation 1272/2008 is 'Skin Corr. 1A', and hence 'H314: Causes severe skin burns and eye damage', and 'EUH071: Corrosive to the respiratory tract'. The serious damage to eyes is implicit for substances classified as Category 1 for skin corrosion.
