Description of key information

As a result of a 72 h read across-toxicity test to algae the EC50 of 9-octadecenoic acid sodium salt was determined to be 58 mg/L and the NOEC was found to be 20 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
58 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
20 mg/L

Additional information

An algal growth inhibition test was conducted on an analogue substance 9-octadecenoic acid sodium salt to assess the toxicity to aquatic algae following OECD guideline No. 201. The test duration was 72 hours. As a result, the lowest EC50 value (determined by the AUG method) was found to be 63 mg/L and the NOEC was determined to be 20 mg/L.

A publication was also available in which the EC50 value of the same read across-substance assessed on Scenedesmus subspicatus is given. The EC50 (72 h) was determined to be 58 mg/L (original source: Huber, (1991).
