Description of key information

The acute toxicity of the test material to Daphnia magna was tested in 3 tests each with 48 h exposure. 1.) a limit test: with no effects in the filtrate made from a saturated solution of a  nominal concentration of 100 mg/l. Measured concentration was below the limit of detection of 0.04 mg/L. (Herold 2004 at Kesla)  2.) a limit test: with no effects at the maximum tested 150 mg/L nominal concentration (dispersed with vehicle/carrier Tween 80 (1%)) (Watzke 1995 at IWT)  3.) EC50 = 2.6 mg/L. Test item was dispersed with vehicle/carrier Tween 80-tetrahydrofuran (Handley 1991 at Safepharm).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Effects were observed in one test (Handley 1991) at concentrations above water solubility level when using a dispersant Tween 80-tetrahydrofuran. This enhanced bioavailability and thus represents an unrealistic exposure situation. Further this test was performed with a test item from a different company than the test items used in the other 2 tests. However, results of the test of Handley 1991 and the second test with Tween 80 as emulsifier with EC50 > 150 mg/L (Watzke 1995) are inconsistent. In the test of Herold (2004) no effects were observed at concentrations below limit of detection (< 0.04 mg/L). It is unsure whether this test was performed at water solubility level.

Neither one of the studies can be used on its own for the hazard assessment. However, as worst case the study of Handley (1991) with an EC50 of 2.6 mg/L (above water solubility) will be used as key study.
