Description of key information

Dimethylsilanediol:
A 48-hour EC50 of >100 mg/l has been determined for the effects of a read-across substance, dimethoxydimethylsilane, on mobility of Daphnia magna.
Methylsilanetriol:
A 48-hour EC50 value of >500 mg/l and NOEC of ≥500 mg/l (nominal concentration) have been determined for the effects of a read-across substance, triethoxy(methyl)silane, on mobility of Daphnia magna.

No test data for short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrate are available fordisilane, chloro Me derivs. Disilane, chloro Me derivs.is expected to hydrolyse rapidly in contact with water to give hydrogen chloride and, initially,the silanol derivatives of the three main constituents, and further hydrolyse to methylsilanetriol and dimethylsilanediol.

Effects of hydrogen chloride on aquatic organisms are limited to those that result from changes to pH in unbuffered media.

For dimethylsilanediol, short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrate data have been read-acrossfromthe related substance dimethoxydimethylsilane. Formethylsilanetriol, short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrate data have been read-across from the related substance triethoxy(methyl)silane. Under conditions relevant to ecotoxicity assessment both the read-across substances will hydrolyse to dimethylsilanediol and methylsilanetriol, respectively, in the course of the tests. The other hydrolysis products, methanol and ethanol, are non-toxic to the environment and it is considered unlikely that their presence significantly affected the results of the tests performed with dimethoxydimethylsilane or triethoxy(methyl)silane.
