Description of key information

In the assessment of bismuth tris(2-ethylhexanoate), read-across to the assessment entities bismuth substances and 2-ethylhexanoic acid is applied since the ions of bismuth tris(2-ethylhexanoate) determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. A 3-h EC10 of 175.4 mg/L bismuth was determinedfor the respiration inhibition of activated sewage sludge whereas the NOEC amounts to≥ 300 mg/L (both nominal). The respective NOEC and EC10 values expressed as dissolved bismuth concentration (based on recovery of 4.7%) are ≥14.1 and 8.2 mg/L bismuth, respectively. Regarding 2-ethylhexanoate, EC10 (71.7 mg/L) and EC50 (112.1 mg/L) values were derived after 17 hours of exposure using Pseudomonas putida. Thus, bismuth tris(2-ethylhexanoate) has a moderate potential for toxicity to microorganisms.
