Reliable short-term toxicity tests results are available for freshwater fish (Brachydanio rerio (new name: Danio rerio)), invertebrates (Daphnia magna) and algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus)) for the registration substance. The relevant short-term values are all expressed in terms of the silanol hydrolysis product, vinylsilanetriol:

Fish: LC50 (96 h): >38 mg/L

Invertebrates: EC50 (48 h): 119 mg/L

Algae: ErC50 (72 h): 231 mg/L; ErC10 51 mg/L and NOEC: 28 mg/L

 

The rapid hydrolysis of the registration substance (half-life 61.5 min at pH 7 and 25°C) means it is likely that the test organisms in each test were exposed primarily to the hydrolysis products, vinylsilanetriol and 2-methoxyethanol.

Reliable data for long-term toxicity to Daphnia magna are available for the read-across substance, trimethoxy(vinyl)silane (CAS 2768-02-7). In this test, the 21-day NOEC for survival and reproduction was found to be 20 mg/L as vinylsilanetriol. The hydrolysis half-lives of tris(2-methoxyethoxy)vinylsilane and trimethoxy(vinyl)silane indicate that, under conditions relevant to ecotoxicity assessment, both will hydrolyse to the same silanol hydrolysis product vinylsilanetriol over the course of the test.

Reliable microorganism toxicity data are available for the read-across substance, trichloro(vinyl)silane (CAS 75-94-5). In this test, the 3-hour EC10 value for inhibition of respiration was found to be >100mg/L (loading rate) as the silanol hydrolysis product, vinylsilanetriol. Both the registration substance and trichloro(vinyl)silane hydrolyse rapidly to vinylsilanetriol, and 2-methoxyethanol and hydrochloric acid respectively.

Reliable short-term data are also available for freshwater fish (Lepomis macrochirus), invertebrates (Brachionus calyciflorus) and algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) for the toxicity of 2 -methoxyethanol:

Fish (96h): LC50 > 10,000 mg/L

Invertebrates (48h): EC50 = 9400 mg/L

Algae (72h): EC50 = 25,500 mg/L

Reliable long-term data are available for invertebrates (Daphnia magna) for the toxicity of 2 -methoxyethanol:

Invertebrates: EC50 > 500 mg/L
