- Details on study design:
- A group of 12 workers employed for 2-19 years in a cellulose acetate factory were observed for irritative symptoms in skin, eyes and respiratory tract. The average concentration of acetic acid vapour in the air was 0.125 mg/L but could increase to an average of 0.44 mg/L during certain work phases.
Results and discussion
- Results:
- Irritative symptoms of the conjunctiva and upper respiratory tract were observed in 8 individuals.
Erosion of the incisors was noted in 5 workers.
All workers had palmar skin that was dry, thickened and blackened with rhagadiform lesions. (taken from EU DAR acetic acid, 2008).
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Conclusions:
- Long term exposure to concentrations of acetic acid vapour (average 0.125 mg/L with peaks of up to 0.44 mg/L) was associated with hyperkeratotic dermatitis with rhagdiform lesions of the palmar skin of the hands and respiratory and conjunctival irritation.
- Executive summary:
In a group of 12 workers employed for 2 years of more in a factory where the average concentration of acetic acid vapour was 0.125 mg/L (with peaks of up to 0.44 mg/L during certain work phases), hyperkeratotic dermatitis with rhagdiform lesions of the palmar skin of the hands was present in all workers while respiratory and conjunctival irritation.was present in 8. Five workers also had some erosion on their incisors.
