Description of key information
Additional information
Appearance/physical state/colour
On the basis of physical observation and using the sense of smell, N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide was found to be a colorless organic solid with no odour at 30°C and 960 hPa.
Melting point/freezing point
The melting point of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide by the capillary method was found to be 185 degC at an atmospheric pressure of 960 hPa.This melting point value at 101325 Pa is equivalent to 195.26 degC.There was no decomposition & sublimation observed of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl) sulphonyl]phenyl] acetamide at the melting point. The other authoritative supporting sources of information also indicate the melting point of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl) sulphonyl]phenyl] acetamide to be in the range 191 degC to 193 degC. However, for the purpose of the dossier as well as for the chemical safety report the experimental value of melting point (which is the key study) will be considered.
Boiling point
The boiling point of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide by the distillation method was found to be 196 degC at an atmospheric pressure of 960 hPa. This boiling point value at 101325 Pa is equivalent to a value of 206.87 degC.No decomposition of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl) sulphonyl]phenyl] acetamide was observed at the boiling point. The other authoritative source of information though indicate the boiling point to be 454.8 degC.However for the purpose of the dossier as well as for the chemical safety report, the boiling point of the key study which is196degC shall be considered.
Density
The bulk density of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide by the mass by volume method was found to be 0.781 g/cm3 at room temperature of 30 °C .This value when converted into 20 degC is equivalent to a value of 0.52 g/cm3.
Particle size distribution (Granulometry)
The particle size distribution (granulometry) of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl) sulphonyl] phenyl]acetamide by the sieve analysis method was found to be in the range of 75 micrometer to 710 micrometer. Majority of the particles were found to be in the size more than 212 (40.6 %) - 180 (21.32%) micrometer in size.
Vapour pressure
Vapour pressure of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide at 25 deg C was estimated to be 0.0000000104391( 1043.91E-011 ) mmHg at 25degC.This value when converted to Pa is equivalent to a value of 0.00000001 Pa.
Partition coefficient
The experimental value of octanol water partition co-efficient (log Pow) of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl) sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide is 0.214 at 30 degC and pH of 7.09.This value indicates that N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide is hydrophilic in nature.
Water solubility
The experimental value of the water solubility of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl) sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide was found to be 2000 mg/L at 30 degC indicating that it is soluble in water. The supporting study also indicates that the substance is soluble in water. However for the purpose of the dossier and chemical safety assessment, the key study values shall be used.
Solubility in organic solvents / fat solubility
Gravimetric method was used to determine the solubility of the substance in organic solvent. The experimental value of solubility of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl) sulphonyl] phenyl]acetamide in methanol at 30 degC was found to be 600 mg/L indicating that the substance is moderately soluble in methanol.Using the Soxhlet/Solvent extraction method the solubility of the substance in Petroleum ether is observed to be 3000mg/L at 30 °C. The solubility value of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl) sulphonyl] phenyl]acetamide in petroleum ether at 20 degC is equivalent to a value of 2000 mg/L.
Surface tension
In accordance with Column 2 adaptation statement of REACH Annex VII, information requirement 7.6, this end point was considered for waiver since surface activity was not a desired property of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide.
Flash point
The flash point of a substance is the lowest temperature at which it can form an ignitable mixture in air. The experimental value of flash point of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide by the closed cup method was found to be 190 degC at 960 hPa.This value when converted into 101325 pascal is equivalent to a value of 200.53 degC.
Auto flammability
N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 30 degC and atmospheric pressure of 960 hPa. This indicates that N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide is not auto-flammable.
Flammability
From the experimental value of flammability, N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl) sulphonyl] phenyl]acetamide ignited when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of 950 degC was brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide is flammable only at high temperature of about 950 degC. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl) sulphonyl] phenyl]acetamide was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.
Explosiveness
According to theoretical considerations based on chemical structure, N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl] phenyl]acetamide does not possess explosive properties. The reason for this is there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties in N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl] phenyl] acetamide . Thus, as per column 2 of Annex VII this end point was considered for waiver.
Oxidising properties
N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide was found to have oxidising property since 115.9 ml of KMnO4 was required for getting the end point of the redox titration for 100 g of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide.
Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products
N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide was found to be stable in organic solvent dichloro methane and no degradation products were formed after 24 hours as evident from the GC-MS chromatogram obtained at 0 hours and that obtained after 24 hours.
pH
1% by volume solution of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide was found to exhibit a pH of 8.32 at 25 degC. Thus 1% by volume solution of N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide is relatively basic in nature.
Dissociation constant
The experimental pKa value for N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide was found to be 0.000000000 000005585 ,0.000000000000005586 ,0.000000000000005587 at 30 degC indicating that it has dissociation properties. The average pKa value when converted at 20 Deg C is equivalent to a value of 0.000000000000003724.
Viscosity
This end point was considered for waiver since viscosity is an inherent property of a liquid that offers resistance to its flow and N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl] phenyl] acetamide is a solid substance and hence this testing was considered scientifically unjustified for N-[4-[(2-hydroxyethyl)sulphonyl]phenyl]acetamide.
